O que melhor nos representa
Data Science Portugal (DSPT) is an informal community of data science enthusiasts created with the purpose of sharing knowledge and experience in the fields of data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data and all related fields. Since September 2016, the Data Science Portugal community is building synergies among data passionate people and bridging many cross domain fields and addressing several data science problems.
By the end of 2019 we counted a total of 70 meetups organized in 5 cities (Porto, Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra and Lisbon) and almost 2200 members registered in the community.
In this year we also organized our second big conference: DSPT Day 2019
In 2020 we’re setting even more challenging objectives, so stay tuned for what’s to come!

Get an update. - DSPT#113: AI-Driven Approaches in the Energy Sector @ PortoUPTEC, Porto
Hello DSPT community, what about a meetup in Porto? Join us at UPTEC for a DSPT meetup full of energy! We will have two talks: “Photovoltaics Asset Management: an AI approach” by João Fontes Machado; and “The revival of symbolic AI for sustainable energy systems” by Ricardo Jorge Bessa. More information below. See you there!
=== SCHEDULE ===
The preliminary agenda for the meetup is the following:
• 18:15 - 18:30: Get together;
• 18:30 - 19:10: Talk + Q&A: “Photovoltaics Asset Management: an AI approach” by João Fontes Machado;
• 19:10 - 19:50: Talk + Q&A: “The revival of symbolic AI for sustainable energy systems” by Ricardo Jorge Bessa;
• 19:50 - 21:00: Networking.Talks Abstracts:
- Photovoltaics Asset Management: an AI approach
- Scientific approach vs. AI methodology
- AI Techniques and their applications on PV asset management
- Use case: ML-powered macro-scale autonomous battery management- The revival of symbolic AI for sustainable energy systems
The energy sector is classified in the European Union AI Act as a high-risk sector. Therefore, aspects such as explainability and interpretability of AI-based decision systems are becoming fundamental requirements for AI adoption by industry. This Talk will present the evolving symbolic models’ concept and its potential to build real-time decision-making systems for human operators in control centers or market traders, and augment existing expert systems to improve existing tasks or perform new tasks by learning from data. These models are Inherently interpretable for humans and can be designed/trained in a human-in-the-loop approach.
About the speakers:
João Fontes Machado, Senior Data Analytics Specialist @ EDPJoão is a Senior Data Analytics specialist from Porto, Portugal, with a background in Electrical Engineering. His experience spans across various fields, including Telecommunications and Renewable Energies - the latter being his most cherished, specially regarding Photovoltaics. With a focus on data, scalability, and automation, João excels at raising overall efficiency and scaling up systems. He is driven by the pursuit of distributed generation and self-consumption as the driving forces behind the Energy Transition.
Ricardo Bessa earned his Licenciado degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto (UP) in 2006, followed by an M.Sc. in Data Analysis and Decision Support Systems from UP in 2008. In 2013, he completed his Ph.D. in the Doctoral Program in Sustainable Energy Systems (MIT Portugal) at UP. He is the Coordinator of the Center for Power and Energy Systems at INESC TEC. His research interests include renewable energy forecasting, computational intelligence applied to energy systems, decision-making under risk, and smart grids. He worked on several international projects, such as the European Projects FP6 ANEMOS.plus, FP7 SuSTAINABLE, FP7 evolvDSO, Horizon 2020 UPGRID, Horizon 2020 InteGrid, H2020 Smart4RES and is the Coordinator of the AI4REALNET project. IEEE Senior Member, Associate Editor of the Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, received the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) Excellence Award in 2022.

Hello DSPT community, what about a meetup in Aveiro? 🙌
Join us at the University of Aveiro (UA) for an energetic DSPT meetup, where we will discuss about Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with Guilherme Cardoso.
Check the event details below.See you there!
=== SCHEDULE ===
• 18:30 - 19:15: Talk + Q&A: "Hands-on with LlamaIndex: First Steps for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)" by Guilherme Cardoso.
• 19:15 - 20:00: Networking/Coffee Break
• 20:00: Dinner is optional but might be an excellent networking opportunity! 🍕register here.A special thanks to AETTUA 👏
See you there!
Talk Abstract:
This session offers a practical introduction to LlamaIndex. We'll combine information retrieval with large language models (LLMs) to build powerful AI systems. We'll focus on the initial steps of setting up a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system, while also getting you familiar with core LlamaIndex concepts like Documents, Nodes, and VectorStoreIndex.
What you'll gain:
- Hands-on experience: Set up LlamaIndex, load your data, and build a search index.
- Core concepts: Understand Documents, Nodes, and VectorStoreIndex.
- RAG foundation: Grasp how retrieved information enhances LLMs in RAG tasks.
Prerequisites:
- Basic Python
- If you want to follow the session, bring your laptop with Python installed.
By the end, you'll have a strong base for building advanced RAG systems with LlamaIndex!
About the speaker:
- Guilherme Cardoso, Head of Data Science & AI @ Scotty AI
